Fake Qi Sensations: How To Distinguish Them?

Updated: Nov 9, 2024

How to Know If Qi Is Flowing in Your Body: Insights from Shifu Costantino Valente

The experience of Qi—the vital energy that flows through our bodies—is not something commonly encountered, even among those practicing various Qi disciplines. One of the primary reasons for this is that many Qi Gong teachings today are not rooted in authentic lineages, or they are taught by instructors who have not yet fully experienced Qi themselves. This unfortunate reality means that many practitioners may never truly connect with or experience the deep, transformative energy that Qi Gong can offer.

In this article, we will explore how to identify whether Qi is truly flowing through your body or if the sensations you feel are merely a "fake" experience. Shifu Costantino Valente, an authentic Qi master, sheds light on this crucial topic in response to a question posed by one of his students during a live session.

The Challenge of Experiencing Qi

One of the most common misunderstandings in the world of Qi Gong is the difficulty in distinguishing between a genuine Qi experience and sensations that may arise from the mind or imagination. Qi is not something that can be seen, touched, or easily quantified. It represents a different level of existence, a form of energy that transcends ordinary perception. For many beginners, the absence of immediate physical proof can make it difficult to know whether Qi is truly flowing or if the sensations they experience are just a product of their thoughts or expectations.

While most Qi Gong practices focus primarily on health benefits—such as increasing vitality and reducing stress—Nei Qi Gong, the form practiced by Shifu Costantino Valente, goes deeper. It aims to cultivate and refine Qi to a level where the practitioner can not only feel but also control and manipulate the energy within their body.

How to Know If Qi Is Flowing Through Your Body: A Response from Shifu Costantino Valente

During a recent live streaming session, a student asked a very insightful question:

How can we understand that the Qi is really flowing in our body and is not a fake sensation?

This is a question that many beginners in Qi Gong ask themselves, and it’s a great starting point for understanding how Qi manifests within our bodies.

Shifu Costantino Valente explains that there are several indicators to determine whether you are truly feeling Qi or simply a temporary sensation that doesn’t correspond to real energy movement. Here’s his response:

  1. Subtle and Progressive Sensations: One key sign that Qi is flowing in your body is the subtlety of the sensation. Unlike physical sensations like muscle tension or soreness, Qi feels more like a progressive flow that moves smoothly through your body. It may feel like a gentle warmth, a slight tingling, or even a soft pulsation in specific areas, but it should never feel sharp or forceful.

  1. Consistency Over Time: The more you practice, the more you will begin to notice a consistency in your ability to perceive the flow of Qi. It’s not something that happens instantly or only during certain moments of deep concentration. Rather, a true Qi experience will persist through time, gradually becoming more apparent as you refine your awareness and energy sensitivity.

  1. No Mental Force or Imagination Required: Unlike some other practices that rely heavily on visualization or mental effort, the true experience of Qi doesn’t require you to force your mind to make something happen. The sensation of Qi is natural, and it arises without intense concentration or deliberate mental manipulation. In fact, trying too hard can block the flow of Qi and create a false sensation of it.

  1. Balance and Harmony: When Qi is truly flowing in your body, you will feel a sense of balance and harmony. It’s not just about feeling the energy; it’s about feeling the whole body align with it. The more you practice, the more you will notice that your body feels lighter, more relaxed, and free from tension, as though your internal energy is working in harmony with your physical being.

  1. Heightened Awareness and Sensitivity: As your practice progresses, you will also experience an increased sense of awareness of Qi in your environment. This heightened sensitivity is a sign that you are learning to connect more deeply with the energy around you, as well as within your own body. The Qi will no longer feel like a random sensation but will become an integral part of your daily experience.

Why the Real Qi Experience Is Rare

While many people can experience temporary sensations during Qi Gong practice, a true and sustained connection with Qi is much rarer. This is because it requires a deep level of self-awareness, consistent practice, and connection to a genuine Qi lineage. Most modern Qi Gong systems focus on health and wellness, and while these can be beneficial, they don’t always guide practitioners toward experiencing Qi on a deeper level.

True Qi masters, such as Shifu Costantino Valente, offer a rare and invaluable resource for those seeking to connect with Qi beyond the superficial. The teachings of Nei Qi Gong go beyond physical health benefits, aiming to bring the practitioner into direct contact with the energy that governs life itself.
