Exploring the Roots of Nei Qi Gong: The Historical Traditions Behind Shifu Costantino Valente’s Teachings
During a recent live streaming session on my Facebook page Nei Qi Gong - Jiaoshi Andrea, we had a fantastic conversation with students asking about the origins and historical connections of the teachings of Shifu Costantino Valente. These questions are important, as understanding the roots of a practice can deepen our appreciation for its power and effectiveness.
Two key questions stood out during the session:
What are the historical roots of the Miao Tong school of Shifu Luo (if they are known)?
Where does Shifu Zhou's tradition come from?
In this blog post, I will explore the historical origins of these traditions and their connections to the practice of Nei Qi Gong.
The Miao Tong School and Shifu Luo’s Teachings
The Miao Tong school is one of the lesser-known yet powerful branches of Chinese Qi Gong. The teachings of Shifu Luo, the founder of the Miao Tong school, are characterized by a deep connection to the natural flow of energy, often integrating spiritual cultivation and healing practices. This school’s emphasis is on utilizing Qi to achieve greater spiritual clarity and physical well-being.
Unfortunately, much of the detailed history of the Miao Tong school is not widely documented in mainstream sources, which is typical of many traditional Chinese arts that were passed down through oral teachings and personal mentorship rather than formal written records. Shifu Luo’s teachings, which Shifu Costantino Valente draws from, focus heavily on intuitive connection with the Qi and mastering it through careful practice.
Though the exact origins of the Miao Tong school are unclear, it is believed that it shares roots with other ancient Chinese healing traditions, particularly those connected to Taoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). These schools often integrated physical movements with meditation and breathing techniques to cultivate Qi and restore balance in the body and mind.
Shifu Zhou’s Tradition: A Deeper Look
Shifu Zhou's tradition also has a rich lineage, primarily linked with traditional Taoist practices and martial arts. Shifu Zhou is known for his deep understanding of the internal energy system, and his teachings incorporate a blend of Qi Gong, Nei Gong, and martial arts techniques. His tradition draws on ancient Taoist principles that focus on the cultivation of vital energy (Qi) and the integration of the body and mind through disciplined practice.
Shifu Zhou’s approach to Qi Gong focuses on deepening the practitioner’s connection to their inner energy and achieving mastery over it, not just for health benefits but also for spiritual enlightenment. His teachings have influenced many modern Qi Gong schools, including Nei Qi Gong, as they highlight the balance between physical and mental discipline, the cultivation of internal energy, and the spiritual awakening that comes with mastering the flow of Qi.
The Connection to Nei Qi Gong
Both the Miao Tong school and Shifu Zhou’s tradition are deeply connected to the Nei Qi Gong system created by Shifu Costantino Valente. The core of Nei Qi Gong is built on the same principles that underlie these traditions – the cultivation and mastery of Qi through physical movement, meditation, and breath control. However, Nei Qi Gong specifically focuses on the three Dan Tians (energy centers in the body) and the integration of the body, mind, and spirit for spiritual evolution and self-healing.
By learning Nei Qi Gong, you are tapping into a powerful lineage of teachings that have been honed over centuries, with roots in Taoism, martial arts, and ancient Chinese healing practices. Shifu Costantino Valente’s unique approach brings together these traditional teachings and combines them with modern understanding, offering students an effective path to not only physical health but also spiritual growth.
