Meditation Exercises & Zheng Song Da Fa

Meditation: Beyond the Practice

When we refer to meditation, many of us are talking about a specific meditative exercise. While this is a commonly accepted use of the term, it's not entirely accurate. Meditation is, in fact, a particular psychological and physical state—a state we cannot "choose to do." It’s not something that can be forced; we are either in meditation or we are not.

Certain exercises can indeed help us naturally and spontaneously enter this meditative state, but these exercises are not the state itself. Practices like mantras, physical postures, instructions, or visualizations are tools that assist in reaching this state, but they are not the essence of meditation. In some cases, they might even become an obstacle if we focus too much on them. The truth is, meditation reveals something that has always been there within us—waiting to be discovered.

Unfortunately, many modern spiritual practices—especially those influenced by the rise of New Age philosophies—have made meditation into something superficial. As people seek quick fixes or intellectual explanations, they often miss the deeper significance of meditation. This lack of seriousness in spiritual fields has led to misunderstandings about what true meditation is.

The Role of ZHENG SONG DA FA in Nei Qi Gong

In the second basic practice of Nei Qi Gong, ZHENG SONG DA FA (meaning Erect Growth and Relaxation) plays a pivotal role in guiding us into this deeper meditative state. While many meditation methods focus solely on techniques, Zheng Song Da Fa goes beyond that. This ancient technique, associated with Taoist practice, opens the doors to both Xian Tian (Previous Heaven) and Hou Tian (Later Heaven) energies.

This method not only helps you enter a meditative state, but it also shapes your physical and energetic alignment. It helps you develop the concentration needed to remain alert and steady during long periods of meditation, maintaining the correct posture for the optimal flow of Qi throughout your body. By learning to relax while staying alert, we create the right conditions for energy to flow freely.

Zheng Song Da Fa is said to have been practiced by Zhang San Feng, the founder of Tai Ji Quan, demonstrating its deep roots in traditional Taoist energy practices. Through this method, we facilitate the flow of Zheng Qi (upright, pure energy) and Jing Qi (essential life force) into the Dan Tian (the energy center in the body), ultimately leading to the creation of the Dan, or the pearl of energy.

This practice, when combined with other Nei Qi Gong techniques, accumulates Yin and Yang Qi, filling the Dan Tian with balanced energy and enhancing our spiritual and energetic development. It is this process that shapes the foundation of true meditation—one that is not simply about following a routine, but about embodying the meditative state as an intrinsic part of who we are.
